According to Ayurveda, a person’s optimal body weight is determined by his/her body constitution – Kapha, Pitta and Vata. If you are very thin or are recovering from an illness or you wish to gain more weight, it is advisable to do it naturally. Here are a few tips that Ayurveda recommends in order to gain a healthy body weight:
- Include soya bean in your diet, as it is high in protein and is ideal for a vegetarian
- Eat lots of fruits or drink fresh fruit juice at least three times a week.
- Include sugarcane, rice, black gram and wheat in your daily diet.
- Exercise regularly
- Include small quantities of spices such as cinnamon, garlic, ginger, cardamom, clove and black pepper in your diet. This helps in stimulating your appetite.
- Make sure that you get adequate sleep as required, a general thumb rule is to get at least eight hours of proper sleep.
- Avoid distractions such as television, mobile phones or laptops before going to bed.
- Eat in a normal speed i.e. it should be neither too fast nor too slow. This stimulates the salivary glands, which helps in proper digestion.
- Refrain from watching television while you are eating. Similarly, do not use your mobile phone or read while you are having food. It’s important to allow your body to be fully involved in the act of eating.
- Have your meals in a hygienic and noise-free environment.
- Do not drink water before or after meals. However, if required, you can take small sips during meals.
- Massage your body with sesame oil. This helps to strengthen the muscles and bones and promotes blood circulation in your body.
